SEARCH ENGINE HINTS & TIPS
Most search engines have a link very near their "submit" button that will connect you with the specific rules that the search engine will follow. To be an effective searcher, you need to know the exact rules for the particular search engine you want to use. Having said that, the following information may be of some general assistance.
- If you are searching for a general topic, you may want to start with an index, such as Yahoo!, Google, or the Librarian's Internet Guide.
- Excite, HotBot, InfoSeek, and Northern Light attempt to understand your questions phrased in natural English. If you are skitterish about creating a search string, these would probably be more comfortable for you, but they may return a large number of off-subject hits.
- The "Sherlock" search assistant built-in to Macintosh's System 8.5 can accept a question phrased in standard English, will turn that question into a search string, and submit it to a series of search engines. (You can decide which ones it should use.) The results will be returned to you in a listed sorted by relevancy. Ask Jeeves and Alta Vista reportedly have similar "natural language" capabilities.
- If you have a very specific topic in mind, you might want to start with AltaVista, Lycos, or WebCrawler.
- Sometimes casting a wide net is what you need. You should then use a "metasearch" system that, like Sherlock, queries a number of search engines at once. Examples of metasearch systems include Dogpile, Highway 61, MetaCrawler, and SavvySearch.
- If you place a plus sign (+) directly in front of a word, that tells most search engines that the word MUST appear on the page. Conversely, a minus sign (-) tells most search engines that the word should NOT appear on the page. This is not absolute - think of it more as a "suggestion" to the search engine. The search engine may return a page that ignores your advice if it has another reason to provide it.
- Phrases contained within quotation marks are generally taken exactly as is. For example, "mom's apple pie recipe" is less likely to produce off-target hits than simply using those four individual words.
- Some search engines allow you to use the logical terms, "AND" and "NOT," to combine words and prhases. Usually the AND and the NOT need to be capitalized, with at least one space immediately before and after. For example, recipe AND pie AND (apple OR raspberry) NOT "macadamia nuts", should get you pie recipies that contain apples or raspberries but do not contain macadamia nuts.
- If you have at least version 4.x of Netscape's browser, you may be able to save some keystrokes simply by typing in the name of the company you seek. Instead of the whole "http://..." routine, just type in (for example) Delta Airlines, and the "Smart Browsing" feature may just be intelligent enough to send you to the correct location.
- Continuing with Netscape 4.x+ features, if you are registered as a user at "My Netscape" then you can just enter My Stocks or My Calendar in the URL field, and the system will bring up your personalized data directly. Similarly, if you type in (for example) ZIP 97210 then you will jump immediately to local news, weather, sports, etc. (Works only with major cities.)
