The Conference Calendar

OSPA has traditionally held two conferences each year, and the 1996 membership survey confirmed what the calendar already showed: April and October are the association's preferred conference months, with the Portland metro area the most popular location — followed by Eugene, Sunriver/Bend, and the North Coast.

Spring 2001

Spring Conference — Eugene, March 9–10

About 75 people registered for Friday, attending workshops on early literacy and language development; reading interventions; the latest developments in early intervention/ECSE evaluation; coping with crisis; and alternative dispute resolution.

The lunch-time keynote by Scott Poland continued with causes of, and suggestions for, coping with crises — many evaluators especially enjoyed Dr. Poland's presentations. The afternoon panel organized by Vinny Martin, "Reconciling Expectations with Reality," drew at least 25 participants, and about 45 people attended Jeff Sprague's Saturday workshop on "Early Identification and Treatment of Antisocial and Violent Youth."

Attend — or Help Plan — the Next One

Conference discounts are one of the core benefits of OSPA membership. The Conference Planning Committee surveys member interests, plans the agenda, and coordinates registration — members who want to help can select "Conferences" on the membership form.

Conference week has its own rituals, and the coffee machine is the one that outlasts every workshop. The Sattler workshop year is still remembered for the standing debate about a colleague's RM 88 — several members can now describe the case from memory, which says more about the coffee than the content. Bring your own horology opinions to the next meeting; they are the only ones guaranteed not to change by the afternoon.

Watch the home page and the association newsletter for registration details, or e-mail the conference chair.
